Overview on Tenses - SPC Spoken English Classes

Hi readers,

We at SPC Spoken English Classes realised that it would be a good idea to give a general overview on tenses and their importance while speaking in English.

With our years of experience in teaching english to different students with personal guidance, we realized that one of the toughest topics for our students in learning to speak in English is 'tenses'.

This has been a concern for many students irrespective of the different english speaking academies and institutes they have attended here in Pune.

Do you know what tense is?

Tense is a category in English grammar that helps you explain something about a person/ object/ event/ action relative to time.

So let's have a look below.

There are three main types of tenses:

a) Past Tense

b) Present Tense

c) Future Tense

Each of these three main tenses are further divided into four kinds.

Please see the important words for each kind. These words have to be used based on the tense used while speaking.

a) Past Tense

1. Simple Past

Important words:

did / didn't

2. Simple Past Continuous

Important words:

was / wasn't

were / weren't

3. Past Perfect

Important words:

had / hadn't

4. Past Perfect Continuous

Important words:

had been / hadn't been

b) Present Tense

1. Simple Present

Important words:

do / don't (do not)

does / doesn't (does not)

2. Simple Present Continuous

Important words:

is / are / am

isn't (is not) / aren't (are not) / ain't (am not)

3. Present Perfect

Important words:

has / hasn't (has not)

have / haven't (have not)

4. Present Perfect Continuous

Important words:

has been / hasn't been (has not been)

have been / haven't been (have not been)

c) Future Tense

1. Simple Future

Important words:

will / won't (will not)

shall / shan't (shall not)

2. Simple Future Continuous

Important words:

will be / won't be (will not be)

shall be / shan't be (shall not be)

3. Future Perfect

Important words:

will have / won't have (will not have)

shall have / shan't have (shall not have)

4. Future Perfect Continuous

Important words:

will have been / won't have been (will not have been)

shall have been / shan't have been (shall not have been)

These are the key types and kinds of tenses that will more than often be used in your daily routine of speaking in english.

Although you're reading this as a blog, but learning english online is not as effective as having a face-to-face tutoring class such as our spoken english classes in Pune.
